The Kumkum Saree : Sambhalpuri Ikat Handloom Saree
The Kumkum saree has traditional floral motifs woven through the body and the pallu has an intricately woven checkered pattern with elaborate motifs on it.
The Ikat from the Sambhalpur region of Orissa is very detailed and has beautiful floral motifs that have been woven into the saree. The weaving process is intensive and every thread and motif is woven with love. The colour contrast makes a bright bold statement.
Ikat is one of our favourite kind of weave. Ikat is an Indonesian word derived from the word ‘mengikat’, meaning to tie. Although Ikat originated in Indonesia, it travelled far and wide to India, Japan and China. Even within India there is the Ikat from Gujarat and then that from Orissa. The basic technique of ikat might be the same in all these regions but tiny distinctions make the ikat of each of these regions very distinct.
