Product Description
Some fabrics carry the weight of a whole culture in their threads. Ilkal is one of them.
The Devi is a handloom Ilkal cotton tiered dress with a silk yoke that is nothing short of a love letter to one of Karnataka’s most treasured weaving traditions. Deep magenta and gold woven stripes in silk run the length of the dress body — the characteristic fine check patterns of Ilkal weave catching light with a subtle sheen that only handloom can produce. At the body, a bold purple and gold vertical stripe panel in silk commands the front, framed by the finer magenta check on either side. At the hem, a deep gold Ilkal border — the defining motif of this weave — anchors the entire dress in pure weaving tradition. The generous tiered skirt fans out in sweeping layers that move like a classical dance costume and photograph like a painting.
This dress doesn’t reference tradition. It is tradition — worn on a modern woman’s terms.
The Craft
Ilkal is a centuries-old handloom weaving tradition from Ilkal town in Bagalkot district, Karnataka. Its signature lies in a unique joining technique called tope teni — where the body and the border of the fabric are woven separately and then joined on the loom, creating a distinct, structured border that is entirely characteristic of this weave. The gold temple border, the fine checked body, and the lustrous warp threads that give Ilkal its characteristic sheen are all present here — woven entirely by hand on a traditional pit loom by artisan weavers keeping a 500-year-old tradition alive.
On a tiered high-low dress, this weave is revelatory — the structured Ilkal border at the hem becomes a design feature of extraordinary beauty.

Why You’ll Love It
✦ Ilkal weave on a tiered dress — the structured gold temple border of Ilkal at the hem of a sweeping tiered skirt is a design decision of genuine brilliance; tradition and modernity in perfect balance
✦ The colour story — deep magenta, royal purple and burnished gold is a combination that is simultaneously regal, festive and deeply rooted in South Indian textile heritage
✦ The purple stripe body panel — bold, vertical and luminous against the finer magenta stripe in silk; it gives the dress a graphic, contemporary energy that keeps it from ever feeling costume-like
✦ The gold border — everywhere — at the hem, at the cuffs, woven into the body; the gold threads catch light constantly and give this dress an inner luminosity that photographs at every angle
✦ Pure handloom cotton — breathable, structured and comfortable; this fabric has the slight stiffness and rustle of authentic handloom that softens beautifully with wear
✦ That tiered sweep — the Ilkal border running the full circumference of the tiered hem creates a visual finish of extraordinary richness; mid-movement this dress is genuinely spectacular
✦ Free size — the gathered, tiered construction flatters every body type effortlessly
A Note on Handloom Character
Every thread of this dress was woven by hand on a traditional pit loom. The characteristic slight irregularities in the weave, minor variations in stripe width and the natural texture of handloom cotton are the living signatures of authentic craft. This is not a printed imitation of Ilkal — it is the real thing, woven in Ilkal town by artisan weavers.
Colour variation of up to 10% may occur due to lighting and screen settings. All photographs are of the actual product.
